Manaus Is First State Capital to Restart In-person Classes in School System

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The government of Amazonas announced yesterday the restart of in-person classes of the state public school system in Manaus. Amazonas is the first state in the country to resume classes in public schools and private institutions. According to Governor Wilson Lima, a survey was conducted with parents, students, and teachers about the need to resume in-person classes.

Two key points contributed to the decision: the drop in the number of funerals, and bed occupancy where a situation of decline and stability are said to exist. The president of the Amazonas Education Workers Union, Ana Cristina Rodrigues, however, reported that a general assembly of teachers will be convened and a strike should not be ruled out.

Private educational institutions resumed their activities in Manaus on July 6th and say they have not faced any problems. According to Nelson Falcão, marketing director of the Pinocchio Educational Center and Martha Falcão School, which provide primary and secondary education, everything is proceeding as expected.

“We have a carpet to disinfect the student’s shoes. They only come in if they are wearing masks. We have a smart bracelet – it goes through the reader without having to touch it; the temperature is taken by our nurse, who is there on standby, and when they (the students) come into the room, they take off their shoes, leave them outside the room and walk in with slipper socks. And there’s a 1.5-meter gap between the chairs.”
