At the Amazon Summit, Brazil’s President, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, emphasized that developing nations should not be subjected to what he termed “green neocolonialism.”

He emphasized the need for affluent countries to contribute financially if they truly intend to preserve rainforests.

“It’s not merely countries like Brazil, Colombia, or Venezuela that require funds. It’s nature itself,” Lula pointed out, highlighting the historical damage caused by two centuries of industrial development.

He expressed concern over wealthy nations disguising protectionist measures as environmental concern.

Lula stated that nations with large tropical forests, such as the Amazon countries, Congo, and Indonesia, will present a united stance at COP28 in Dubai.

Their message underscores the need to both protect the rainforests and support the well-being and aspirations of the resident communities.

At an earlier session, Lula urged developing countries to be wary of any “green neocolonialism” that might use environmental protection as a guise to impose trade barriers or overlook national regulations.

The Brazilian leader has been vocal in his criticism of environmental conditions set by the European Union in the 2019 trade deal with Mercosur (Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay).

He views the proposed green safeguards as hindrances, stalling the ratification process of a deal that’s been under negotiation for nearly 25 years.

Highlighting the legacy of colonial-era policies, Lula noted that countries like the Amazon nations inherited an exploitative economic model characterized by unsustainable resource utilization, slavery, and the marginalization of local populations.

He argued that the after-effects of this system are still palpable today.

Lula also underscored the historical responsibility of developed countries, stating, “It’s these nations that, over the ages, have exhausted natural resources and polluted the planet most.

The wealthiest 10% of the global populace holds over 75% of wealth and is responsible for nearly half of all carbon emissions.
