New Exhibit Opens at Gilson Martins: Daily

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Iconic handbag and accessory designer Gilson Martins, known for work that incorporates the Rio landscape, will host another art showing at his store in Ipanema, starting today, July 20th at 4PM. This time, designer and artist Silvia Coelho will exhibit her patchwork canvases showing scenes from Rio with a playful touch.

The exhibition is themed “Silvia Carioca de Marajó,” a play on the artist’s origin in the Ilha de Marajó, an island located in the state of Pará, in northern Brazil and her current hometown, Rio de Janeiro.

“Figures with shadow and reflection, a set of vibrant colors, the symbolism of night and day are all features of this work that reinvents and celebrates the new look at the contours of the Zona Sul [South Zone] of Rio,” said the Gilson Martins’ press release about Coelho’s work.

Silvia uses a lively patchwork approach, creating forty mini-canvases in the typical Gilson Martins’ style depicting the silhouettes of Rio’s monuments and mountains. She also added new images to her designs, such as kites, balloons and street cars, as well as sewing lines, which represent electric wire and gondola cables that connect the city.

The opening of the exhibit today will be celebrated with the store’s signature caipirinhas, as well as a new drink creation containing Açaí liquor, from Pará state, the biggest producer of açaí berries in the world.

“Everyone is invited,” Marcelo Barros, store manager, told The Rio Times. “The show with free entry is a great tip for those who want to know more about reusing materials and symbols of Rio, plus a good choice for lovers of art, creativity and, above all, Rio de Janeiro,” according to the press release.

Gilson Martins has hosted a series of exhibitions intended to bring the people in Rio together over artistic creations. The innovative designer is always looking for new ways to incorporate Rio into his designs and frequently encourages his staff to engage in the creative process as well.
