German Unemployment Surges to 10-Year High

Germany’s job market faces a significant setback as unemployment hits its highest level in a decade. The Federal Employment Agency reported nearly 3 million jobless individuals in January, marking a stark increase from previous years.

The unemployment rate jumped to 6.4% in January, up 0.4% from December. This translates to 187,000 more unemployed people compared to January 2024. Such high numbers were last seen in January 2015, with 3.032 million out of work.

This surge reflects Germany’s broader economic struggles. The country has experienced two consecutive years of economic decline, a rare occurrence in its recent history. German businesses grapple with global competition, high energy costs, and rising labor expenses.

Industry leaders express concern over these developments. Rainer Dulger, head of the Confederation of German Employers’ Associations, calls the job market figures “a wake-up call.”

In addition, the mechanical engineering sector, crucial to the German industry, reports that one in four companies plan job cuts in the coming months. Labor Minister Hubertus Heil acknowledges the challenges.

He proposes a “Made in Germany” subsidy to boost private sector investment and advocates for more competitive energy prices to support manufacturing. Despite these issues, Germany‘s job market has shown some resilience.

Unemployment has risen gradually rather than sharply. The Federal Employment Agency expects stability in February, with potential improvements starting in March. The upcoming general elections on February 23 may prove pivotal.
