Generals irregularly promoted by Castillo are arrested

The Peruvian Attorney General’s Office announced this Monday the arrest of six generals under investigation for allegedly having given money to rise in rank with the authorization of former president Pedro Castillo.

The Public Ministry has informed, through its profile on the social network Twitter, that for the moment it has only arrested six people, of the 26 raids that have been carried out in different cities of the country.

So far, the authorities have not found a former General Commander of the Police or a general, who is chief of the Police of the Cuzco region.

The individuals investigated would have paid between US$20,000 and US$30,000 for their promotion to general during the first year of the Castillo government, in 2021, reports the Peruvian radio station RPP.

The former president is serving 48 months in preventive detention for the investigations launched by the Prosecutor’s Office for rebellion and conspiracy, after the Court dismissed him for announcing the dissolution of the Congress.

In addition, the Public Prosecutor’s Office has indicated that a team from the Illicit Enrichment and Constitutional Complaints Area has raided the home and office of Castillo’s former Defense Minister, Walter Ayala.

“(They have) seized documents and devices, within the framework of the investigation for alleged irregular promotions of police and military in 2021,” says the Prosecutor’s Office.

The raid was ordered by the first preparatory investigation court of the Supreme Court of Justice of Lima, reports the newspaper ‘La República’.
