Peru’s Pedro Castillo will serve 18 months in pre-trial detention for self-inflicted coup

Pedro Castillo will serve 18 months in pre-trial detention, as requested by the National Prosecutor’s Office and determined Thursday by Supreme Judge Juan Carlos Checkley.

The Supreme Court of Preparatory Instruction resumed hearing to read the resolution this afternoon. Thus, the former president will remain detained in the Barbadillo prison in the district of Ate.

The magistrate ordered this when he found well-founded elements of a conviction, a possible sentence of more than four years in prison, and the danger of the case.

He also ordered the appearance with restrictions and rules of conduct of former Prime Minister Anibal Torres, who is being investigated in the same case.

The virtual hearing was attended by the prosecutor Alcides Chinchay, who supported the request of the Public Ministry for 18 months of pre-trial detention against the former officials.

At the beginning of the hearing on Thursday morning, December 15, it was recorded that Pedro Castillo refused to be notified of the application against him.

The professor did not appear with his previously accredited lawyers, Ronald Atencio and Raúl Noblecilla , so his defense was left to a public defender.
