Brazil: Free admission to state museums on São Paulo’s anniversary

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – In São Paulo’s 468th anniversary celebration on Tuesday, January 25, all state museums will offer free admission.

Among the highlights, there are two exhibitions of the “Modernismo Hoje” program to open at the Museu Afro Brasil, in Ibirapuera Park. The Memorial da Resistência (Memorial of Resistance), the Pinacoteca Station and Pina Luz, which do not open on Tuesdays, will not be part of the program.

As part of the celebrations of the centennial of the 1922 Week of Modern Art, the Museu Afro-Brasileiro will host exhibitions “Arqueologia Amorosa de São Paulo,” showing the city from the second half of the 19th century through the first half of the 20th, and “Padre Jesuíno do Monte Carmelo aos Olhos de Mário de Andrade.” They will be on display until June 30, 2022, from 10 AM to 5 PM.

Visitors to the Museu da Língua Portuguesa, at Luz Station, will find the temporary exhibition “Sonhei em Português.” The exhibition addresses 21st century migrations with testimonials from migrants in the city of São Paulo, both Brazilians and foreigners. Isa Grinspum Ferraz is the curator.

At the Museu do Futebol, in Pacaembu Stadium, the novelty is the temporary exhibition “Tempo de Reação – 100 anos do goleiro Barbosa.” In the area in front of the museum, children can participate in the “Vacations at the Museum” program, which offers a complete structure of different activities, such as goal shooting, ping-pong, table soccer and a children’s area. Adults can also play. The program runs from 9 AM to 6 PM.

The exhibition honoring Rita Lee will be held at the Museu da Imagem e do Som (MIS). The show, curated by herself and the singer’s son, João Lee, presents a panorama of Rita’s career and life.

In the gardens of the Casa das Rosas, at Paulista Avenue, visitors will find the “Renascimento” installation, consisting of 365 suspended mannequins, paying homage to the victims of the Covid-19 pandemic and to health professionals. The work is by artist Siron Franco. In addition, there will be a special program for the city’s anniversary with the presentation of the “Canta a poesia” project.

Free programs will also be held Tuesday at Museu da Casa Brasileira, Museu da Imigração, Museu Catavento, Paço das Artes, Casa Guilherme de Almeida, Casa Mário de Andrade and Museu de Arte Sacra de São Paulo.
