RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The PoderData poll, conducted April 24-26, 2022, shows that 33% of Brazilians think the Covid 19 pandemic has ended, while 57% say the opposite. Another 10% could not give an answer.

The moving average of deaths from the disease in Brazil was 127 on Saturday (April 30), the latest data available, and is on an upward trend after two months of decline and stability. At the height of the health crisis, this figure peaked at 3,124 in April 2021.

Health Minister Marcelo Queiroga announced the end of Covid-19 Espin (public health emergency of national importance) in Brazil on April 17.

The decision was criticized by politicians and commissions dealing with the pandemic, such as Conass (National Council of Health Secretaries).

On Friday (April 29), Fiocruz (Oswaldo Cruz Foundation) said that despite the decrease in cases, hospitalizations, and deaths from Covid-19, the pandemic is not over.

The survey was conducted through calls to mobile and landline phones. 3,000 interviews were conducted in 283 communities across the 27 states of the federation.

To reach 3,000 interviews, proportionally populating groups by gender, age, income, schooling, and geographic location, PoderData makes tens of thousands of calls. Often more than 100,000 calls are made until respondents are found that faithfully represent the total population.

The margin of error is 2 percentage points. The confidence interval is 95%.

SUPPORTERS SHARED

PowerData crossed data on the population’s perception of a possible end to the pandemic with evaluation data on the work of Jair Bolsonaro (PL). The survey shows that the president’s supporters (great+good) are divided on the issue.

In this stratum, 47% believe that the pandemic is over, compared to 44% who do not. Among Bolsonaro’s opponents (bad+bad), 66% answered that the crisis is not over.

STRATIFICATION

Opinion about the end of the pandemic varies among demographic groups. PowerData Highlights:

  • Gender: 40% of men believe the pandemic is over; 27% of women;
  • Age: 37% of 16- to 24-year-olds believe the pandemic is over;
  • Region: residents of the northern region are most likely (59%) to affirm that the pandemic is over;
  • Income: People earning up to 2 salaries are least likely to believe the pandemic is over: 66%.
