Rio Film School Hosts A Week of Screenings and Lectures

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – From Monday, March 2nd through Friday, March 6th, the Academia Internacional de Cinema will host will its Semana de Orientação (Orientation Week) in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. In both cities, there will be free public film screenings and lectures given by special guests including actress Inês Efron, film critic André Miranda, award-winning production designer Brigitte Broch, animator Rosana Urbes and director Lúcia Murat.

In Rio, the events will take place in the Academia Internacional de Cinema (International Film Academy, AIC) building located in Botafogo, marking the opening of the Rio site.

During the five days in both cities, all film screenings will take place at 5:30 PM with lectures following at 7:30 PM.

In Rio, the film “XXY” will start the week, with its screening on Monday, March 2nd followed by a talk given by the film’s actress Inês Efron. From Argentina, Efron’s film credits also include “Medianeras: Buenos Aires da Era do Amor Virtual” and “The Fish Child.”

Next on Tuesday, March 3rd, the film “Hoje eu Quero Voltar Sozinho” (Today I Want to Go Back Alone) will screen and O Globo film critic André Miranda will follow with a lecture.

On Wednesday, the film “Quase Dois Irmãos” (Almost Brothers) will screen with the director Lúcia Murat speaking following the film.

The film, “O Leitor” (The Reader), directed by Stephen Daldry, will screen on Thursday with the film’s production designer Brigitte Broch giving a lecture following the screening.

Broch won the 74th Academy Award for production design with Catherine Martin for their work on the 2001 Baz Luhrmann film “Moulin Rouge!” Broch’s film credits include production design on the films “Romeo + Juliet,” “21 Grams,” “Babel,” and “Safe House.”

Concluding the AIC Orientation Week in Rio on Friday, the films “Luz Anima Ação” and “Guida” will screen with animator Rosana Urbes speaking following the screenings. Urbes’ film “Guida” won the Anima Mundi prize for Best Brazilian Short in 2014.

The Academia Internacional de Cinema was founded in 2004 by American filmmaker Steven Richter and Brazilian journalist Flávia Rocha. It first opened in the city of Curitiba. There it offered free audiovisual courses, workshops, and a two-year cinema course.

In 2006, the AIC moved its headquarters to São Paulo. The new Rio de Janeiro site, with its view of Cristo Redentor (Christ the Redeemer) and Corcovado, will offer courses including film editing, cinematography, art direction, documentary filming, and production.

Entrance to all screenings and lectures during Orientation Week is free following registration to events at the Academia Internacional de Cinema (AIC) website.
