Estadão newspaper editorial: “Lula brings shame to Brazil”

By · May 31, 2023 · 2 min read

By Cristyan Costa

The editorial of the newspaper O Estado de S. Paulo published this Wednesday, 31, raises the tone with President Lula (PT) because of the reception of Venezuela’s President, Nicolás Maduro, in Brazil.

According to Estadão, the PT leader “embarrasses Brazil” by nodding to the Chavista.

“After rolling out the red carpet for Nicolás Maduro, a world pariah for obvious reasons, the President declared that the Venezuelan tyrant is a legitimately elected ruler and that Venezuela, therefore, is an exemplary democracy,” the newspaper noted.

“In Lula’s opinion, all the countless accusations of human rights violations, manipulation of elections, and persecution of dissidents and journalists in that country are nothing more than ‘narrative that has been built against Venezuela.”

“Lula then suggested to ‘comrade Maduro’ that he ‘construct his narrative,’ which ‘will be infinitely better than the narrative they have been telling against you.'”

Further, Estadão claims that Lula refers to the European Union and the United States when he speaks of “our adversaries.”

“In Lula’s ‘narrative,’ Americans and Europeans simply ‘don’t like’ Maduro, out of pure ‘prejudice,’ and that’s why they decided to make the Chavista government unviable – and the hardships of Venezuelans, with hyperinflation, escalating misery and hunger, and the exodus of 7 million citizens in a few years, would be the result of international sanctions, not the ruin of the country promoted by Chavismo.”

The newspaper says that Lula has “delusions” of a Venezuela benefiting from infrastructure works funded by Brazil, even the Ministry of Finance “collecting coins in the couch.”

Moreover, according to Estadão, judging by “Lula’s obscene speech,” it is a narrative that makes the eyes of the PT boss shine.
