El Salvador extends emergency regime until December

The Legislative Assembly of El Salvador today granted a new extension to the emergency regime requested by the government of President Nayib Bukele to combat organized crime.

According to the legislative agreement, the ninth extension to this temporary suspension of constitutional rights will now be extended until December 17.

On Tuesday night, the decree received 67 votes in favor, nine against, and six deputies abstained from voting.

This same Tuesday, President Bukele highlighted the results that the application of this exception regime has given in the fight against the gangs that had turned El Salvador into one of the most insecure countries in the region.

El Salvador’s Minister of Justice and Security, Gustavo Villatoro, told deputies that 57,568 people had been captured in connection with gangs since the start of the emergency regime.
