El Niño to Heat Up Brazil’s Spring

Brazil’s recent heatwave will extend into spring, says the National Institute for Space Research (INPE).

They forecast higher temperatures and more rain, especially in the South. The North and Eastern Amazon may get less rain than usual, according to INPE.

Gilvan Sampaio, a lead researcher at INPE, says El Niño will influence Brazil until early next year.

“The heat won’t be as extreme, but will persist,” he states. Sampaio also adds that late spring will see hotter waves.

“Temperatures could rise above 35 degrees Celsius in parts of Brazil,” he notes.

Another INPE researcher, Caroline Vital points out that El Niño affects weather globally. “Brazil will see warmer months ahead,” she predicts.

Vital also says Northern Brazil may get less rain, while the South could get more. “Central areas are less likely to be affected,” she clarifies.

Spring starts at 3:50 AM (Brasilia time) this Saturday. Seasons change because of Earth’s tilted axis, explains Josina Nascimento of the National Observatory.

“This tilt affects how sunlight reaches Earth,” she says.

In winter, nights are longer than days. “But as spring comes, day and night will have the same length,” Nascimento adds.
