Digital CPF and CNH Available in Brazil in New Android and iPhone App

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The Federal Treasury launched on Thursday, May 14th, the Digital CPF App: it allows you to save and access your Individual Tax Identification Number (CPF) on your cell phone, as well as your driver’s license (CNH). The documents’ authenticity is confirmed through a QR Code. The App is available for both iPhone and Android.

Currently, only those who have a CNH can use the Digital CPF, because the App requires biometric identification. If you do not have a driver’s license, you will see this error message: “biometric validation unavailable, please seek service with the Brazilian Federal Treasury”.

The CPF and CNH digital versions feature a QR Code to confirm that they are legitimate. The CPF has served as a single identifaction in federal tax entities since last year to access information, check benefits, and proceed with administrative cases.

The CNH is still required, as provided by the Traffic Code, which is why it has also been incorporated into the Digital CPF. (There is an App called ‘Carteira Digital de Trânsito’ [Digital Transit Card] that stores the CNH and the CRLV [vehicle registration and licensing certificate]).

The new App also features a chatbot to answer questions regarding the IRPF (Personal Income Tax) statement, which can be submitted until June; the deadline has been extended due to the pandemic of the novel coronavirus, the cause of COVID-19.

To use the Digital CPF, accepting the terms of use is required, which are in fact two laws: the LGPD (General Law on Data Protection) and Articles 7 and 16 of the Civil Rights Framework for the Internet, which deal with explicit consent on the use and storage of personal data.

How to download and use the Digital CPF

The Digital CPF is available for download on Google Play (Android) and on the App Store (iOS). To use it, you need to follow a few steps:

Enter your CPF and date of birth;
Accept the terms of use (LGPD and Civil Rights Framework for the Internet);
If you do not have a CNH, you will see the error message “biometric validation unavailable” and you will not be able to use the App.
If you have a CNH, perform a life test, which consists of a sequence of actions (smile, turn your head sideways, close your eyes);
Take a selfie for biometric authentication;
Create a four-digit password.
