RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Among the victims of the twin-engine crash on Tuesday morning in Piracicaba, São Paulo state, was businessman Celso Silveira Mello Filho, shareholder partner of Cosan, of the sugar and ethanol industry.

Celso was a shareholder of the company and brother of the company’s chairman of the Board of Directors, Rubens Ometto Silveira Mello.

Also on the plane were Celso’s wife, Maria Luiza Meneghel, his three children, Celso, Fernando and Camila, pilot Celso Elias Carloni and co-pilot Giovani Gulo. He was with his family in the King Air 360 aircraft. All occupants died.

The occurrence was reported by the Fire Department at 9 AM.

Cosan was founded in 1936 in the city of Piracicaba, in the interior of São Paulo state, with the founding of its first sugarcane milling plant. From the 1980s on, it expanded its operations with the acquisition of several mills in the state under the leadership of Rubens Ometto

The company cultivates, collects, and processes sugar cane, the main raw material used to produce sugar and ethanol.

Today, the group has five main verticals of operation. The most recent one announced was the entry into the mining sector.

The company’s other traditional business fronts are the operation of Raízen (joint venture with Shell in the sugar and ethanol, energy and fuel distribution sectors), Compass (gas and energy), Moove (lubricants), and Rumo (rail-based logistics operator).
