Business creation in Colombia increased by 10.6% in 2021

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – According to the annual report on the creation of companies in Colombia, prepared by Confecámaras, 2021 closed with a positive balance in terms of entrepreneurship in Colombia.

According to the report, 307,679 new companies were created nationwide between January and December, an increase of 10.6% compared to 2020.

The report, titled “Business Creation Dynamics,” is based on information from the Unified Business and Social Register (RUES), which collects information from the commercial registers of the country’s 57 chambers of commerce.

Of the total number of newly registered businesses, individuals account for 74.4% and companies for 25.6%.

Importantly, compared to 2020, the number of companies increased by 14.6% from 68,853 to 78,880 in 2021.

The number of registrations of individuals increased from 209,449 to 228,799, which is a positive change of 9.2%.

Another noteworthy fact is that of the natural persons established between January and December 2021, 61.3% were women and 38.7% were men.

On the other hand, among the companies founded during the same period, 23.2% have medium-high participation of women in the capital.

“One of the most important assets of society is its entrepreneurs, who work tirelessly to advance their businesses and create new opportunities, setting an example for the entire country,” said Julián Domínguez, president of Confecámaras.

After the presentation of the report, President Iván Duque highlighted the figures on his Twitter account, where he wrote that this increase in the creation of companies has been key to economic reactivation and job recovery.

According to RUES figures, 52.2% of companies created between January and December 2021 were created to create at least one job. Of these companies, 40% have women in their workforce and 9% have women in management positions.

The most dynamic sectors in job creation include trade, accommodation and food services, manufacturing, professional, scientific and technical services, and construction, accounting for 76.5% of the total number of new employers.
