The advisors of the New Development Bank (NDB), also known as the BRICS Bank, elected former Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff (PT) as the institution’s new trustee on Friday (24).
The election took place unanimously after the end of the term of Marcos Troyjo, who announced his resignation at the beginning of March.
“On March 24, 2023, the Board of Governors of the New Development Bank (NDB) unanimously elected Mrs. Dilma Vana Rousseff as President of the Bank, effective immediately, in full compliance with the Articles of Agreement of the New Development Bank and the procedures for the election of the President,” the bank said in a statement.
The NDB also highlighted that Rousseff participated in the agreement that created the institution in 2014, expanding cooperation with several countries in Latin America, Africa, the Middle East, and Asia.
Upon assuming the presidency of the NDB to complete the Brazilian term until 2025, Rousseff will move to Shanghai and earn a salary of around US$500,000 a year, among other benefits.
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) announced the appointment of the former president to the bank in mid-February.
