Covid-19: Brazil’s Rio de Janeiro reaches 99% of adult population with one vaccine dose

By · September 21, 2021 · 2 min read

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Eight months after the first vaccine against Covid-19 was administered in a ceremony at Christ the Redeemer, the city of Rio de Janeiro on Monday, September 20, reached the mark of 99% of the adult population immunized with the first dose against the novel coronavirus.

In total, over 8.6 million vaccines against Covid-19 were administered in the municipality of Rio, 5.3 million of which were first doses. In the capital, almost 62% of adults have completed their vaccination schedule with either 2 doses or single-dose.

Considering Rio de Janeiro residents over 12 years of age, vaccination coverage with the first dose reaches 95%.

Among the elderly, over 23,000 have been administered the booster dose, which began to be given this month. This week, the third dose will be given to 89 to 84 year-olds, spread out one day per age through Saturday, September 25.

The effects of the advanced vaccination are being reflected in hospitalizations. Yesterday afternoon, 559 people were hospitalized in the capital’s public network with the coronavirus. It is the lowest figure since April 2020, although at the moment ICU admissions are higher.

The change in the hospitalization profile occurred during the second wave of the disease in Rio, with the arrival of the Gamma variant, when demand for ICU beds exceeded that of wards.

The Rio de Janeiro City Hall confirmed that it will restart vaccination against Covid-19 for adolescents in the coming days. According to the schedule released by the Municipal Health Secretariat (SMS), 13 year old girls will be immunized on Wednesday and Thursday, September 22 and 23, and boys in the same age group will be immunized on Friday, September 23.
