Brazil’s former Justice Minister Sergio Moro elected senator for Paraná state

Sergio Moro (União Brasil) was elected senator for Paraná on Sunday, October 2. He received 1.9 million votes (33%).

The former judge will remain in office until 2030. The seat he will take is the one occupied by a former colleague and current senator Alvaro Dias (Podemos), who was running for reelection.

After announcing the result, Moro said that his victory “represents the strength of Lava Jato.”

“The campaign was successful. We had the best team; we could present our ideas, proposals, and history, which gave us credibility, and we had the support of União Brasil.

“I am very proud because it represents the strength of the Lava Jato and the fight against corruption in Brazil. We will fight to recover this agenda in the National Congress with all our strength,” said Moro at the Regional Electoral Court (TRE-PR).

In second place in the race for Paraná was journalist Paulo Martins, of the Liberal Party (PL), with 29% of the votes. Alvaro Dias got 23% of the votes, in third place.

Moro’s alternates are Luis Felipe Cunha and Ricardo Guerra, both from União.

SECOND ROUND

In an interview with RPC, Moro commented on the second round of presidential elections and said he would never support the candidate and former president Lula da Silva (Worker’s Party – PT).

“We will define our position in the coming days. Today is a day of reflection, a day of gratitude, a day for us to position ourselves, but in any case, I have already spoken before: we will never be on the side of Lula da Silva and the PT.”

Moro contested the elections in Paraná after trying to run for São Paulo but was denied a transfer of electoral domicile by the Electoral Court.

ABOUT SERGIO MORO

Sergio Fernando Moro was born in 1972 in Maringá, in northern Paraná. He is married to lawyer Rosângela Wolff Moro, who was elected federal deputy for São Paulo. They have two children.

The former judge graduated in law from the State University of Maringá (UEM) and took a specialization course at Harvard University’s law school in the United States.

He earned a master’s degree in State Law from the Federal University of Paraná (UFPR) and a doctorate from the same institution in constitutional law.

Moro was the head of the 13th Federal Court of Curitiba and gained national projection after being responsible for the Lava Jato cases in the first instance.

He left his position as a federal judge in 2018 to assume the Ministry of Justice and Public Security in the Bolsonaro administration.

In 2020, he resigned as a minister because Bolsonaro decided to change the director general of the Federal Police, Maurício Valeixo, who had been appointed by him.
