Brazilian Human Rights Minister Meets With Group Advocating “Gay Cure”

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The Minister of Women, Family, and Human Rights, Damares Alves, met on Monday, August 5th, with the group “Psicólogos em Ação” (Psychologists in Action), which is running for election to the Federal Council of Psychology, to be held from August 23rd to 27th. The team comprises professionals who defend the gay “cure”, such as Rozangela Alves Justino, an activist in the area.

In addition to the group of psychologists, the “Movimento Ex-Gays do Brasil” (Ex-Gays Movement of Brazil) group attended the meeting, bringing together people who claim to have been “healed” from homosexuality and who have been meeting on social media for three months.

On its Facebook page, the group defines itself as the “minority of minorities” and shares stories of people who claim to have been freed from “gender ideologies.” The contact phone number on the page has a prefix for Curitiba and the group’s motto is “For the right to quit and stay.”

Both the group of psychologists and the ex-gays have published photos with the minister on social media but did not disclose what was discussed at the meeting. CartaCapital magazine reached the Ministry of Women, Family, and Human Rights’ press office for further details on the meeting, but there was no comeback by the time its article was published.
