Brazilian government demands blocking of assets for US$3.6 million to perpetrators of invasion in Brasilia

By · January 20, 2023 · 2 min read

On Thursday, the Brazilian government asked the courts to block assets of companies and individuals suspected of financing and executing the assault on the Government House, the Congress, and the Supreme Court on Jan. 8, for 18.5 million reais, about 3.6 million dollars.

According to a statement from the Office of the Attorney General of the Union (AGU), the money requested is to pay for the damage caused to the infrastructure and furniture of the Planalto Palace, the National Congress, and the Federal Supreme Court, destroyed by Brazilian Spring protesters, many of them supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro (2019-2022).

The Executive Branch filed a request for compensation for damages before the Brasilia District Court for those accused of participating, organizing, and financing the assault on the headquarters of the three branches of government.

The request calls for the freezing of the assets of 52 people and seven companies that are under judicial process, accused of having participated in the assault on the headquarters of the three powers as a way of expressing disregard for the elections defeated by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva before Bolsonaro.

The amount requested by Lula’s government does not include the damage caused to dozens of works of art in the official palaces, including gifts made by foreign leaders to Brazil over the decades.
