Brazil: TSE presents new electronic ballot box model for 2022 elections

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The Superior Electoral Court (TSE) yesterday, December 13, presented the new electronic ballot box model to be used in the 2022 elections. The presentation was held in Manaus, at the Positivo Tecnologia plant, the company in charge of producing the equipment.

According to the TSE tender, 225,000 ballot boxes of the new model will be manufactured. The delivery is scheduled for May next year. The equipment’s useful life is 10 years.

Among the new features are longer-lasting batteries, faster processors, and a touch screen monitor terminal. According to the TSE, this technology will enable faster identification of voters at the polling station. While one elector votes, the terminal will be able to identify the following voters, thereby reducing waiting time in line.

During the event, TSE Chief Justice Luís Roberto Barroso reinforced that both the electronic ballot box and the voting system are safe.

“We are working to protect the TSE systems almost as a matter of image, because, as far as the content is concerned, there is no chance of fraud in the elections. We are all improving our protection mechanisms. This has become a relevant issue in the last 2 or 3 years. In fact, cyber attacks of the magnitude are a recent phenomena,” he said.
