Brazil: Strike threat escalating; may reach Federal Treasury at airports
RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The Planalto Palace begins the week amid strike threats of federal servants planned for Tuesday, January 18, unhappy with the wage increase pledged only for security agents.
Among Jair Bolsonaro’s aides, the concern is that the expansion of strikes and potential spread to other careers may further impact the President’s disapproval rate, at 60% according to Datafolha.

In the Treasury, the extension of mobilizations to ports and airports is not ruled out. “Ports are starting to join more strongly and what we would not like to see is starting to become an imminent risk: the mobilization reaching airports, both cargo and passengers,” says Federal Treasury Union of Fiscal Auditors George Souza.
The protest outside the Ministry of Economy called for Tuesday by FONACATE (National Forum of State Careers), representing over 30 class entities, and the developments in the Treasury during the week are seen as a warning sign for the development of the crisis.
FONACATE chairman Rudinei Marques says it is still hard to speak of a general strike, but if a category manages to mobilize, it may spread to others.
