Brazilian Supreme Court considers military personnel committed crimes in January protests

Justices of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) say that there is sufficient evidence that military personnel of different ranks committed crimes on January 8 during the invasion of the National Congress in Brasilia.

According to the Justices, the crimes occurred at two different times.

In the first moment, the higher-ranking military officers would have allowed the coup camp to be maintained, which would have made possible the formation of the group that planned the protest in the Three Powers headquarters.

In a statement after being arrested, Colonel Jorge Eduardo Naime, the Operations Commander of the Fedreal Distric Military Police (PMDF), said that he had also been forbidden to dismantle the camp in December, still under the Bolsonaro government, when Marco Antônio Freire Gomes commanded the Army.

The Justices of the Supreme Court believe that there is a body of evidence formed by the testimonies already given and others that are yet to occur, which point to the participation of military personnel in several crimes on January 8.
