Retail sales fell 1.8% in March this year compared to last year’s same period.
The information is contained in the Stone Retail Economic Activity Index, which presents monthly reports from the sector.
The survey is based on data obtained by the electronic payments company Stone and the Propague Institute.

The release of the numbers occurred on Thursday, March 13.
Only two sectors registered growth in March in the monthly comparison:
- pharmaceutical articles (10%);
- furniture and appliances (1.8%).
The other five segments did not manage to achieve positive results:
- hypermarkets and supermarkets (-10%);
- books, newspapers, magazines, and stationery (-9%);
- fabrics, clothing, and footwear (-4%);
- food products, beverages, and tobacco (a subcategory of hypermarkets and supermarkets (-1.4%);
- and construction materials (-1.2%).
