Brazil reports surge to new record in corporate investors in cryptocurrencies
Brazil witnessed a surge in the number of legal entities investing in cryptocurrencies, as 80,200 companies reported their operations to the IRS in May, surpassing the previous record set in April.
However, individual investors experienced a slight decline.
The IRS reported that 1.92 million individuals declared their cryptocurrency operations in May, a 4.7% decrease compared to April.
As reported to the IRS, the total amount invested in cryptocurrencies in Brazil decreased.
In April, investments amounted to R$21.8 (US$4.5) billion, the highest since May 2021. However, the figure dropped by 26% in May to R$16.1 billion.
The decline in investments was particularly notable in operations conducted through foreign exchanges, decreasing from R$4.7 billion in April to R$1.5 billion in May.
Operations conducted without brokers also declined, from R$2.49 billion to R$2.36 billion.
On the other hand, operations through domestic exchanges reached R$12.2 billion.
Female participation in the market increased, with women accounting for 12.04% of operations, up from 10.55% in April.
Men were responsible for 87.96% of operations, down from 89.45%. However, these numbers are still far from the record high of 27.08% in December 2022.
Bitcoin remained the most popular cryptocurrency, with 1.37 million reported operations in May, a decrease from 1.63 million in April.
Ether was the second most popular, with a decline from 641,000 declarations in April to 458,000 in May.
The USDT stablecoin led in terms of amounts moved in operations, accounting for R$12.8 billion in transactions in May, a decrease from R$18.6 billion in April.
The total number of operations with USDT was 186,000 in May.
