Brazil registered more than 2,100 homo-affective unions in 2021

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The declarations of homo-affective stable union registered, in 2021, the third consecutive high in Brazil. The data are part of a survey conducted by the College of Notaries, responsible for notaries in the country.

According to the data, 2,188 homo-affective unions were registered in 2021 in the country, increasing approximately 2% compared to the previous year. Already in 2019, the number of declarations was 2151.

The highlight among the Federative Units was Rio de Janeiro State, with 408 registrations of homo-affective stable union throughout last year. In 2020, the number of declarations in the state of Rio de Janeiro was 364, according to the Colégio Notarial. São Paulo appears in the second position, with 355 requests for homo-affective unions in 2021.

The lowest rates appear in the northern states of Roraima, Acre, and Tocantins, point out the data. The states registered one, three, and four declarations of homo-affective union between January and December 2021, respectively.

The president of the Colégio Notarial do Brasil (CNB), Giselle Oliveira de Barros, explained the relationship between the pandemic and the increase in declarations among Brazilians.

“We feel, in our daily service at the notary office counter, that the pandemic and living together during the quarantine caused many couples who only lived together to realize the importance of making their relationship official and seek the legal security that the stable union deed brings,” said Giselle Oliveira de Barros.

Brazil’s Southeast and South regions have a more significant predominance of homo-affective stable unions.

“We also noticed that the states in the South and Southeast regions lead the national ranking of realizations of the act. Of course, we must consider the population density of these places. Still, we must also reflect on the social importance of the existence of a standardized service and a guarantee of equality throughout the national territory,” she concluded.

The possibility of a stable union between people of the same sex completed ten years of existence in Brazil in 2021. The practice was adopted through the Direct Unconstitutionality Action (ADI) 4277 and the Argument of Noncompliance with Fundamental Precept (ADPF) 132 – the right to formalize a homo-affective relationship, made official by the Federal Supreme Court (STF).
