Bolsonaro Signs Appointment of First Woman Rector of Rio Federal University

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – President Jair Bolsonaro signed this Friday, May 31st, the appointment of Denise Pires de Carvalho as Rector of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ).

The appointment will be published in Monday’s edition of the “Diário Oficial da União” (“Federal Gazette”).

A professor at the university’s Institute of Biophysics, she was on the three-name list that was compiled in April after polling within the university community, and submitted to the President. She will be the first woman to lead the university in its nearly 100 years of existence.

At the Carlos Chagas Institute of Biophysics (IBCCF) of UFRJ, Professor Carvalho teaches undergraduate courses in health and postgraduate programs in Medicine (Endocrinology) and Biological Sciences and Physiology.

A physician graduated from UFRJ, she holds a Master’s and a Doctorate in Biological Sciences (Biophysics) from IBCCF, as well as Post-Doctorate studies at Hôpital Bicêtre (Paris) and Universitá Degli Studi di Napoli (Italy).

She has been director and vice-director of IBCCF, academic coordinator of the Pro-Rectory of Graduate Studies of UFRJ as well as assistant director of undergraduate and graduate studies.
