Rotas Brasileiras: SP-Arte’s new project that shows productions from regions outside the Rio-São Paulo axis

The first edition of Rotas Brasileiras (Brazilian Routes) – SP-Arte’s new fair – opened its doors to the public this week and will run through Sunday, May 28. With 70 exhibitors, including galleries and guests, this exhibition goes beyond the Ark in São Paulo.

There will also be a program with external partners, such as discussions with the public and editorial publications related to the art world.

The event focused on valorizing national artistic and photographic production, presenting projects from different regions, mainly outside the SP-Rio axis.

“There are high-quality works from the Amazon, from the Jequitinhonha Valley, from the capitals and hinterlands of different regions that we don’t always have access to,” said Fernanda Feitosa, director of SP-Arte.

Participating with their own exhibitions are Arte Pará (PA), one of the oldest visual arts events in Brazil:

• Uma Concertação pela Amazônia (AM), which shows photographs from the region;
• Preamar (MA), a project to promote the visual arts in Maranhão;
• Novos para Nós (SP), which maps folk art and presents works from the Vale do Jequitinhonha;
• Pierre Verger Foundation (BA), which focuses on cultural exchange between Brazil and Africa; É Mundo Museum Award;
• Mario Cravo Neto Institute (BA);
• Indigenous Banks of Xingu (MT), produced by the Kamayurá, Mehinaku and Waujá ethnic groups; and
• Wesley Duke Lee Institute (SP), a house museum that replicates the artist’s studio and contains a collection.

Conversations with artists Alberto Pitta, Panmela Castro, and Siron Franco will take place during Rotas Brasileiras, and the exhibition Brasilidade tridimensional-which occupies the exterior of the Ark-is curated by Ana Carolina Ralston.

An adjacent building originally intended for coworking startups will host Pupila Dilatada, an event on art and technology.

While the opening featured the chronography “Sidney Amaral: Cognition and Memory Manifesto” by content hub MJournal, the exhibition also confirmed the release of “São Paulo” by artist Alexandre Furcolin, represented by Galeria Karla Osorio and published by Louis Vuitton, and “Brasileiros” by photographer Gabriel Wickbold, which revolves around São Francisco.
