CNN Brasil Signs Agreement with Claro Net, Will be Showcased

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Through this partnership, Claro Net TV clients may watch CNN Brasil‘s programming as part of the basic HD package, as well as in other more comprehensive services.

In addition, the content will be available in regular TV transmission and also in the Now platform, with live and on-demand programming.

“Claro’s premise is to take what’s new and relevant to its clients. So, it couldn’t be different,” says Fernando Magalhães, Claro’s director of programming and content.

“We are happy to start our story alongside Claro”, says Douglas Tavolaro, executive president and founder of CNN Brasil.

CNN’s launch date in Brazil is not yet certain. There is a chance that it will happen in December, but most likely it will only debut next year.

Following the example of the Turkish CNN, the Brazilian company was licensed by a local investor, Rubens Menin, controller of the construction company MRV.

According to an update made by the channel, he holds 65 percent of Novus Media shares, the company behind CNN Brasil and to which he appointed his son as president.

The remaining 35 percent is owned by Douglas Tavolaro, who traded Record’s journalism vice-presidency for the channel’s executive presidency. Until the update, as reported by the São Paulo State Trade Board, the ratios were 99 percent and one percent, respectively.

Brazil recorded 16.54 million households with access to pay-TV in July 2019, according to ANATEL.

Half of these households get their signal from Grupo Claro, in a total of 8.2 million (49.34 percent). Other major providers in the segment are SKY, with 4.97 million (30.04 percent); Oi, with 1.57 million (9.5 percent); and Vivo with 1.44 million (8.67 percent).
