Unemployment in Uruguay stands at 7.9 percent in December 2022

The unemployment rate in Uruguay stood last December at 7.9 percent of the Economically Active Population (1.7 million), just above November’s 7.8 percent, the National Statistics Institute (INE) reported yesterday, Tuesday.

In the last month of 2022, the employment rate (labor demand) increased to 57.7 percent, from 57.5 percent in November, and the activity rate (labor supply) to 62.7 percent, from 62.4 percent, according to the Continuous Household Survey.

Of the employed population, 8.2 percent is underemployed, while non-registration to social security for their main job stood at 20 percent.

Unemployment was lower on average in the Montevideo region (7.1 percent) than in the interior of the country (8.4 percent).

Unemployment at the national level closed in December 2021 at 7 percent.

According to the Ministry of Labor, the labor market has shown a recovery to pre-pandemic levels, and the final figure is expected to be below 8 percent by 2022.

Unemployment is the third main concern of Uruguayans, according to the survey published in April 2022 by the consulting firm Cifra.
