Colombian authorities report a riot and kidnapping of guards in a prison
The director of the National Penitentiary and Prison Institute (INPEC) of Colombia, Daniel Fernando Gutiérrez, reported that in the midst of a prisoner riot in the Tumaco prison, several guard officials had been taken hostage. Local authorities are responding to the situation.
“We regret to inform public opinion of a difficult situation that is occurring at this time in the Tumaco facility. Apparently, some prisoners are holding a riot and want to escape; it seems that at that moment they are detaining one of our officials” confirmed the director.

The official added that the INPEC regional directorate is in the place attending to the situation, to establish communication channels and see how the detainees are doing.

“The National Police and the National Navy are also already there, effectively verifying the situation with all the necessary support,” he said.
The uniformed man confirmed that a unified command post will be established to deal with the emergency and not allow escapes from the prison complex.

“Unfortunately, this situation is happening in Tumaco. We are going to establish a unified command post, to be able to establish communication and effectively specify what is happening,” he concluded.
The Medium Security Penitentiary and Prison Establishment of Tumaco is located in the southwest of the department of Nariño, in a rural area.
