RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Jair Bolsonaro privately criticized Chamber of Deputies President Rodrigo Maia‘s “haste” in recognizing Joe Biden’s victory over Donald Trump in the U.S. presidential succession.
He described as “irresponsible” the post in which Maia noted that the news “restores the values of a truly liberal democracy that values human, individual and minority rights.”
Bolsonaro’s reaction, witnessed by aides, demonstrates his difficulty in dealing with the change of command in the White House. The Brazilian President observed the American succession through the eyes of a supporter.
He hoped for Trump’s reelection. He heard from an aide on Saturday the thought that he should acknowledge Joe Biden’s success and congratulate him. Bolsonaro rejected the advice. He said it was too early.
Bolsonaro was provided with information on the United States electoral process. His first reaction was to consider that it would not seem appropriate to acknowledge Biden’s victory before December 14th, the day the electoral college will meet to confirm Joe Biden’s name.
