Nubank: Client Loses R$12,000 to Fake Employee Scam
RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The scams using Nubank as bait do not happen only on the internet: a 46 year old client in Americana (SP) received a call from an “employee” asking him to send a photo with his ID, as they would be trying to access his account. Then the criminals took out a loan and made two transfers at NuConta, resulting in losses of approximately R$12,000 (US$2.800).
On January 21st, the man received a call on his cell phone from an alleged Nubank employee: he claimed he needed a photo with his ID to update his records, because the system was faulty and someone had tried to access his account. The client never suspected anything and sent the picture.

Then, on Tuesday night, February 18th, Nubank told the client that someone had taken out a loan of R$12,000 at NuConta. So this money was transferred to different accounts in two different transfers, one for R$6.3 thousand and another for R$5.5 thousand. He had not authorized either of those transactions.
The man appealed to the CPJ (Judiciary Police Central) to have the scam investigated. The case was reported by TodoDia and O Liberal, two local newspapers in Americana, based on the Civil Police’s report.
Nubank says appropriate action has been taken
In a statement, Nubank states that the case was handled directly with the client and all appropriate action was taken. “The type of activity reported by the client is a crime and we will always cooperate with the relevant authorities to investigate and restrain actions like this,” says the company.
The Fintech further explains that “under no circumstances do we call clients requesting the sending of photos, and we never ask clients to send us their documents or other sensitive information by e-mail”. The sending, when requested, is performed exclusively through the App.
Finally, Nubank clarifies that the amount stolen was R$12 thousand, not R$23 thousand as previously reported.
