Brazil posts record solar energy generation in February

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Brazil ended the month of February with the highest amount of solar energy generation in history. More than 1,200 MWh (megawatt-hours) were generated, twice as much as in the same period last year.

The data comes from the Chamber for the Commercialization of Electric Energy (CCEE) and was compiled at the request of CNN.

The figure was already within expectations as new solar installations enter the market, reflecting the path taken by the country in opting for cleaner and more diverse energies, according to Ricardo Gedra, manager of analysis and market information at CCEE.

“On a positive note, the Brazilian electricity structure is diversifying. A diversified matrix is good because you don’t depend on a few, such as thermal and hydroelectric plants. This increase for the country brings more security and robustness to the Brazilian electricity system,” he explained.

Currently, of the total power generation capacity in Brazil (including all sources), solar energy accounts for only 2.5%.
