Azul Airlines: passenger traffic drops 27.3% in the first quarter

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The largest drop was seen in international flights, with a 90.4% reduction in the number of revenue passenger kilometers transported (RPK).

Despite this, domestic passenger traffic increased in March by 11.2% year-over-year, against a 15.4% rise in domestic capacity (ASKs), resulting in an occupancy rate of 71.7%, 2.7 percentage points below the same period in 2020.

“In March, we proactively adjusted our capacity in response to the second wave of the pandemic in Brazil. While demand was impacted by quarantine measures implemented across the country, our network’s strength and connectivity, coupled with the flexibility of our fleet, resulted in an 11% growth in domestic demand compared to March 2020,″ says John Rodgerson, CEO of Azul.

“We have some challenging months ahead, but as demonstrated throughout this crisis, our business model is resilient and will benefit us during the pick-up in demand in the second half of this year,” he added.
