Brazil has much to offer in environmental services – former U.S. ambassador

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Brazil has put forward major proposals to environmental issues since last year, and has much to gain from the world’s growing demand for care and services linked to the environment, according to former U.S. Ambassador to Brazil Todd Chapman.

“This is an important issue for Brazil to capitalize on. Not by seeing it as a threat, but rather as an opportunity,” Chapmann said on Tuesday, January 25.

“Brazil is rich in environmental resources, and the wealthiest world, in the G20, is saying that it wants to buy environmental services. Brazil has a lot to offer, has many platforms, many companies using very innovative technologies to offer these products to the world.”

Chapman, who served the U.S. government as ambassador to Brazil until July last year, currently works as a consultant to companies, including on projects in the environmental area.

Joe Biden’s nominee Elizabeth Bagley is expected to replace him. The appointment is pending approval by the U.S. Senate.

According to Chapman, who left the post for personal reasons, shortly after the resignation of Ricardo Salles from the head of the Ministry of Environment, Brazil has given important signals to the world in the environmental area, which were welcomed by the international community.

“President Jair Bolsonaro announced several important and very aggressive measures for the environment, which were very well received. After Cop26 [the global climate conference] other announcements were made by the government that were very welcomed,” he said.

“The important thing now is to implement these commitments.”
