The Electoral Court ordered the annulment of the mandate of federal congressman Marcelo Crivella (Republicans).
In addition, he becomes ineligible for eight years and will have to pay a fine of R$433,000.
The decision is from Judge Márcia Santos Capanema de Souza.
The accusation is that Crivella set up a scheme in 2020, when he was mayor of Rio de Janeiro, to prevent reports on the situation of the city’s hospitals during the Covid-19 pandemic.
He allegedly used municipal civil servants, who became known as “Crivella’s Guardians.”
The coalition filed the lawsuit against the politician in 2020, “It’s the people’s turn!” of the PT and PCdoB.
He is accused of the “practice of abuse of authority and prohibited conduct of a public agent in electoral campaigns, based on the Constitution.”
The defense of the former mayor said that the sentence that removed Crivella’s mandate as a federal representative has no immediate effect and that he has already appealed the decision.
His press office said that a judge of the first instance could not revoke the mandate of a parliamentarian.
