Argentina will not break off relations with Nicaragua, but demands respect for human rights

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – After the elections in Nicaragua, where President Daniel Ortega was reelected, Argentina called for “dialogue and democratic coexistence” in that country. In this way, it joined the claims of the United Nations Commissioner, which expressed its “concern” for the situation of the detained opposition leaders, demanding “respect for the human rights of all the population” of that nation.

Through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, under the command of Santiago Cafiero, it was expressed through a message that “the Argentine Republic ratifies its historical commitment with the defense of Human Rights and firmly supports the work of the United Nations High Commissioner, Michelle Bachelet, regarding the situation in Nicaragua”.

The statement was made public through the social network Twitter, from the official account of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Thus, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated: “We reiterate our concern about the detention of opposition leaders, as well as the need for the Nicaraguan government to ensure respect for the human rights of the entire population”.

Likewise, from the portfolio headed by Santiago Cafiero, they remarked that “we maintain our diplomatic tradition of non-interference in internal issues of other nations”. However, at the same time, the Foreign Ministry made it clear that “in Argentina we understand that democracy implies respecting ideological diversity and civic participation without proscriptions”, therefore, “our country does not break relations with Nicaragua and maintains its position of condemning the physical and financial blockades that only lead to aggravate the suffering of its people”.

The claims for the political and human rights situation in Nicaragua arise after the claims of the United Nations High Commissioner, Michelle Bachelet, who had demanded before the Human Rights Council in Switzerland, that “it is imperative that the government of Nicaragua returns to guarantee the full exercise of civil and political rights of all Nicaraguans; that the persecution against the opposition, the press and civil society ceases”.
