Argentina: Construction of the new Integrated Naval Base in Ushuaia is progressing

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The Minister of Defense, Jorge Taiana, led in the city of Ushuaia the ceremony to start the construction of the new Integrated Naval Base, which aims to strengthen the national presence and continue expanding Argentina’s development and logistic capabilities in Antarctica and the South Atlantic. Its strategic geographic location will allow it to provide logistic and assistance services to other countries.

The Minister of Defense said that “this Integrated Naval Base is also an example of the centrality that the State gives to this province in the perspective of a bicontinental country; that is why we also understand that it is necessary to strengthen the presence of the Armed Forces in Tierra del Fuego, adding to the historical presence of the Navy, the Army and the Air Force”.

With respect to the work plan, the Minister pointed out that “it will be carried out with our own resources and will demand several stages in the long term, this year we will start the necessary soil studies for the works, we will undertake the extension of services to reach the future pier and we will set up two industrial warehouses built by the Tandanor shipyard that will allow us to sustain the works during the winter months, which in this province have low temperatures and few daylight hours”.

“We are sure that we are laying the foundations for the strengthening of the South Atlantic, the sovereign Argentine presence in its seas, in its lands and in the air defending sovereignty, because watching and controlling is the best guarantee of a future for our children and it is the best tribute we can pay to those who almost 40 years ago gave their lives for the homeland in the Malvinas War”, highlighted Taiana.

During the ceremony, Minister Taiana, together with Governor Melella, Mayor Walter Vuoto and the Chief of Staff of the Navy, Admiral Julio Guardia, unveiled a plaque that symbolically represents the foundation stone where the construction of the pier at the new Integrated Naval Base will begin.

The preparatory stage of this project will begin with the installation of two transportable industrial buildings that will be used as large construction sites for the development of the infrastructure and will be built by Tandanor Shipyard. Infrastructure services will also be installed.

In a next phase, the pier will be built and the administrative buildings will be constructed. In a later stage, the service housing for the personnel will be built, as well as facilities to provide assistance services to ships.

This new base, due to its location, will provide greater connectivity with Antarctica, which will enhance logistics and Antarctic scientific research and the country’s strategic positioning in the Atlantic.
