Argentina approves first medical cannabis production plant

In the South American country of Argentina, the National Agency for Medicines, Food, and Technology (ANMAT) has authorized the company “Cannava” to operate a production plant for medicinal cannabis.

It has a capacity of 80 tons of medicinal inflorescences and nearly 4,000 kilos of active pharmaceutical ingredients per year.

In 2017, Argentina’s parliament passed a law allowing the cultivation of cannabis for medicinal purposes, but the regulation was not approved until November 2020.

“A comprehensive technical and regulatory audit conducted by ANMAT over two years resulted in a satisfactory final inspection that led to Cannava’s national approval as a medical cannabis processing plant, the first in the country,” the company said in a statement.

The company has been producing and marketing a cannabis-derived product in Jujuy since late 2021 for treating epilepsy, chronic pain, anxiety, and gastrointestinal syndromes, among others.

With the authorization of “ANMAT”, “Cannava” can market this and other products throughout Argentina.
