Africa’s natural gas industry is set for significant growth in 2024, playing a key role in the continent’s energy transition.

The African Energy Chamber’s 2024 Outlook Report confirms a global and African rise in natural gas production.

Certainly, this surge aligns with energy transition strategies, positioning natural gas as a crucial transitional fuel.

In addition, Kinetic Energy of Australia and South Africa’s Industrial Corporation (IDC) jointly undertake a significant LNG project in Mpumalanga province, South Africa.

Capitalizing on a 3.1 billion cubic feet natural gas discovery in Amersfoort, Mpumalanga, this project aims to produce 50 MW, expanding to 500 MW.

Touted as South Africa’s largest onshore LNG project, it marks a significant step towards diversifying the country’s energy sources away from coal and towards cleaner alternatives.

African natural gas output set to increase from 265 to over 280 billion cubic meters by 2025.

With its increasing LNG production, Mozambique is poised for substantial growth, outpacing current output and leading in Eastern Africa.

Also, Nigeria and Algeria aim to increase LNG exports, joined by Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Mozambique, and the Senegal-Mauritania region.

However, Major energy companies are playing a significant role in this expansion.

Africa’s Energy Landscape

TotalEnergies drives gas exploration in South Africa and advances the Mozambique LNG project, emphasizing major African upstream activities.

Wintershall Dea raises stake in Algeria’s Reggane Nord project and starts gas production in Nile Delta’s East Damanhur block.

In addition, Natural gas sector growth addresses current needs and lays the foundation for a sustainable energy future.

It acknowledges that decarbonization is gradual, necessitating the establishment of infrastructure for renewable energy development.

In short, African Energy Chamber urges leveraging natural resources, especially natural gas, for energy security, decarbonization, balancing local initiative, and global collaboration.
