54.2% of children in Argentina aged 0-14 were poor at the end of 2022

The poverty rate in Argentina stood at 39.2 percent at the end of 2022, covering 11.5 million people, the National Institute of Statistics and Census (INDEC) reported yesterday, Thursday.

The figure presented by the state entity through a technical report came from the Permanent Household Survey (EPH), in which 31 urban agglomerates and 9.9 million households in the country were analyzed.

The new survey, corresponding to the second semester of last year, showed that poverty covers 29.6 percent of households, equivalent to 2.9 million families in Argentina.

On the other hand, at least 614,000 households are in a situation of indigence with income below the value of the food basket, reaching some 2.4 million people.

“With respect to the first semester of 2022, the incidence of poverty registered an increase of 1.9 percentage points in households and 2.7 percentage points in individuals,” the INDEC said.

The state entity indicated among its observations that at the end of last year, an increase in family income significantly lower than the increase in basic and food baskets was observed.

“On average, the total family income increased 37.3 percent; the average regional baskets increased 43.5 percent for the Basic Food Basket and 44.4 percent for the Total Basic Basket,” INDEC detailed.

Considering the age groups according to poverty condition, the institution highlighted that a little more than half (54.2%) of people from 0 to 14 years old are poor.

“The total percentage of poor people for the groups of 15 to 29 years old and 30 to 64 years old is 45.0 percent and 35.0 percent, respectively” while “in the population of 65 years old and over, 14.5 percent were below the poverty line”, reflected the entity’s report.
