Uruguay records no intensive care hospitalizations for Covid-19 in 240 days

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – A report by the Uruguayan Society of Intensive Care Medicine (SUMI) shows no admissions were reported on Wednesday, in addition to 4 deaths and 7 discharges.

The country totals 5,950 deaths from the disease to date. The youngest victim yesterday was a 43-year-old woman from Florida and the oldest was an 87-year-old woman from the Uruguayan capital.

With this data, the South American country totals 380,976 Covid-19 cases since the start of the health emergency declared in Uruguay on March 13, 2020, of which 2,305 people are currently suffering from the disease, 68 of whom in intensive care units.

Uruguay remains in the yellow zone of the Harvard index, which accumulates the weekly average of new Covid-19 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, at 5.83.

All departments (provinces) currently register active cases. Flores is the only department in green while the remaining 18 are in the yellow zone.

The country’s borders remain closed to non-residents, except for diplomatic, personal or economic-labor reasons with the Executive’s express authorization.

Uruguay on Wednesday (28) approved the administration of a third vaccine dose – American Pfizer – to people who have completed their immunization regimen against Covid-19 with the Chinese Coronavac.

This was announced on Wednesday by the country’s Ministry of Public Health (MSP) and stated that the decision – which had been under study for several weeks – was taken following the National Vaccine Advisory Commission’s recommendation.

This third dose will be administered “in a phased way” and vaccinated individuals must have had a minimum 90-day period between the second Coronavac and the new Pfizer dose.

With respect to vaccination and according to the web monitor developed by the Ministry of Public Health, by 7:23 PM on Wednesday, 2,553,234 people had been inoculated with the first dose, while 2,188,212 (61.77% of the population) have now completed their immunization schedule with Chinese pharmaceutical company Sinovac vaccine, the Anglo-Swedish AstraZeneca and U.S. Pfizer.
