RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Informal transporters have taken over the highways in Peru’s interior as a form of protest against the increase in the price of fuel and the increase in the price of basic products of the family basket.

Amid this situation, they also demand that President Pedro Castillo fulfill his campaign promise to formalize them and pardon them from the millionaire fines for tickets.

LIMA CONVULSED

As the demonstrators confirmed that the strike would extend to the capital, the Head of State decreed a curfew which began in the early hours of Tuesday, April 5, and ended at the end of the night.

(The President of Peru deploys the army and institutes a curfew while demonstrations of transporters and farmers against the rise in the price of fuel and inflation intensify in the country with blockades of roads, burned tolls, and looted stores.)

The population, however, reacted with much frustration and anger at the controversial measure of the President of the Republic. In the afternoon, thousands of Lima residents took to the streets to protest against the government.

As the hours went by, the marches became so violent that banks, food establishments, and judicial centers were looted, set on fire, and destroyed. The capital’s fury finally caused President Castillo to lift the curfew before 18:00 hours.

(The demonstrators in Ica pushed back the police. A young man dies in the middle of a protest. Protesters denounce that police shot him. According to unconfirmed reports, the protests against the government of Pedro Castillo have already claimed the sixth life.)

GOVERNMENT GIVES IN TO THE INFORMALS

Faced with the increase in protests by the carriers, the Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) and the Superintendence of Land Transportation of People, Cargo, and Goods (SUTRAN) decided to accede to certain requests of the demonstrators, such as condoning their tickets and extending them indefinite licenses.

According to unconfirmed reports, the protests against the government of Pedro Castillo have already claimed the sixth life.
