Tom Zé Returns to Rio’s Circo Voador this Saturday

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Icon of the sixties Tropicália movement Tom Zé is making his triumphant return to Circo Voador in Lapa this Saturday, June 23rd, with the support of eclectic minimalist, Rogério Skylab, who will be launching his new album ‘O Rei do Cu’ (King of the Ass) at the beginning of the evening.

Tom Zé is the embodiment of Brazilian sixties counterculture, and at age 81, he is still rocking and enchanting the crowds as if it were the height of the Tropicália movement. This Saturday, he will be once again gracing the stage at Circo Voador, having recently played here in 2017 for the fiftieth anniversary of Tropicália.

This time the Bahian maverick will bring a special show in which he implores people to help and love Rio de Janeiro.

“It’s natural: on the stage of the Circus Voador, Rio is worshiped, sung, raised, adored and so on. I made a song in that spirit so we could intensify that feeling of care. Everyone knows Rio needs help: moral, physical and cantoral. So let’s meet for this act of intensification and leave the heart full of confidence.” He recently explained.

He also added that he’s “only going to play songs that we can sing together,” and then went on to name some of his finest tunes, “‘Tô’, ‘Augusta, Angélica e Consolação’, ‘Abacaxi de Irará’, ‘2001’, ‘Jimi renda-se’, ‘Ogodô’, ‘Nave Maria.’”

Fans of the old-guard of Brazilian music and legends of Tropicália, such as Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil will be in for a treat.
