SOUTH AFRICA · COST OF LIVING
Key Facts
- —The country South Africa buys crude oil and finished fuel at world prices, so its regulated pump prices are reset once a month.
- —What happened On Monday 5 October, the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources announced increases for every fuel type, effective Wednesday 7 October.
- —The new price In Gauteng, the province around Johannesburg, 95 unleaded petrol rises by R3.33 (US$0.20) to R30.25 (US$1.82) a litre.
- —The record Central Energy Fund data show the previous Gauteng high for that grade was R28.06 (US$1.68) a litre, in June 2026.
- —The cause Brent crude averaged US$101 a barrel, up from US$87.89, amid US-Iran tensions and uncertainty over oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz.
- —The rand The currency barely moved over the pricing period, averaging about 16.21 rand per dollar, so it played almost no part.
- —Still open No fuel-tax relief has been announced, and October’s oil and rand moves will set the November price.
South Africa’s petrol price rises to a record on Wednesday 7 October, after increases of more than R3 (US$0.18) a litre. In Gauteng, 95 unleaded will cost R30.25 (US$1.82), the first petrol price above R30 (US$1.80).
The Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources blamed a jump in world oil prices tied to US-Iran tensions, not the currency. The rand barely moved during the pricing period, but it weakened again on Monday 5 October.
What Changes at the Pump on 7 October
The department’s statement lists a rise for every product. Petrol 95 goes up by R3.33 (US$0.20) a litre and petrol 93, sold only inland, by R3.12 (US$0.19).
Diesel with 0.05% sulphur rises by R2.84 (US$0.17) a litre, and cleaner 0.005% diesel by R3.24 (US$0.19). Wholesale illuminating paraffin, a household fuel, rises by R3.58 (US$0.21).
In Gauteng, the new petrol price is R30.25 (US$1.82) a litre for 95 and R29.88 (US$1.79) for 93. At the coast, 95 unleaded costs R29.38 (US$1.76), IOL reported, citing the department.
The capped retail price of paraffin rises by R4.77 (US$0.29) to R31.82 (US$1.91) a litre, the Mail & Guardian reported. The maximum price of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) rises by 42 cents (US$0.03) a kilogram, or 48 cents (US$0.03) in the Western Cape.
Dollar figures here use about 16.66 rand to the US dollar on 5 October 2026. The department will publish the full price list for each fuel zone on Tuesday 6 October.

Why Oil, Not the Rand, Drove the Increase
The average Brent crude price rose from US$87.89 to US$101 a barrel during the period under review, the department said. It cited “continued US/Iran tensions”, uncertainty over oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz, higher shipping costs and falling inventories.
World prices for finished petrol, diesel and paraffin rose too, because of tight supplies. For petrol, that added 329.07 cents (US$0.20) a litre to the basic fuel price, the import-based cost before taxes and margins.
The rand had almost no effect. Central Energy Fund data put its average at 16.2123 per dollar from 28 August to 1 October, against 16.2139 before.
That tiny gain for the rand trimmed just 0.17 cents (a fraction of a US cent) from the petrol price.
The slate is an account that carries past gaps between pump prices and actual fuel costs. For petrol and diesel combined, it showed a deficit of R10.46 billion (US$628 million) at the end of August.
To pay it down, the slate levy rises by 4.38 cents (less than US$0.01) to 87.66 cents (US$0.05) a litre.

Where the Rand Fits In
The currency matters because the import prices behind South African fuel are set in dollars. When the rand weakens, the same barrel costs more in rand, and the monthly formula passes that on to motorists.
On Monday morning the rand traded at 16.6825 per dollar, about 0.2% down from its previous close, Reuters reported. IOL quoted 16.71 the same morning, after a two-week slide from below 16 per dollar to its weakest level since July.
At that level, a dollar costs about 2.9% more in rand than the average used for the October petrol price. If the weaker rand persists through October, it would push the November adjustment up rather than down.
For now, oil remains the bigger driver. The rand’s role in this month’s increase was close to zero, according to the department’s own breakdown.
A Year of Sharp Swings at the Pump
The coastal price of 95 unleaded has risen by almost R10 (US$0.60) this year, IOL reported. It went from R19.92 (US$1.20) in March to R29.38 (US$1.76) in October.
In April, the government cut the general fuel levy by at least R3 (US$0.18) a litre for two months, IOL reported. Pump prices then fell in July even as the fuel levy returned in full.
Prices climbed again in September, when South African fuel prices jumped from Wednesday 2 September. Mineral and Petroleum Resources Minister Gwede Mantashe said in September there were no immediate plans for new relief, IOL reported.
IOL calculated the cost for a small car using 5.5 litres per 100 kilometres. Its fuel bill per kilometre rises from R1.47 (US$0.09) to R1.65 (US$0.10).
What It Means for US Readers
Travellers renting a car in South Africa will pay about US$6.87 per US gallon for 95 unleaded in Gauteng from 7 October. At the coast, including Cape Town, the figure is about US$6.68 a gallon.
Investors watching the rand should note that this petrol price rise came from oil, not the currency. A weaker rand in October would add a second source of pressure on the next monthly adjustment.
The case also shows how far tension between Washington and Tehran reaches. South Africa’s government named US-Iran tensions and the Strait of Hormuz directly as reasons for the higher pump price.
What Is Not Known
The zone-by-zone price list for inland and coastal towns is due on Tuesday 6 October. Diesel figures are wholesale, so what drivers pay at each station will vary by retailer.
The government has not announced any new cut to fuel taxes. Officials have also not said how long the higher petrol price may last.
The November adjustment depends on where oil prices and the rand move during October.
A record pump price does not by itself signal a currency crisis. The rand played almost no part in this month’s rise.

When does the new petrol price take effect in South Africa?
The new petrol price takes effect on Wednesday 7 October 2026. The Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources announced it on Monday 5 October.
How much will petrol cost in Gauteng from 7 October?
95 unleaded will cost R30.25 (US$1.82) a litre and 93 unleaded R29.88 (US$1.79). At the coast, 95 unleaded costs R29.38 (US$1.76).
Why did the petrol price go up?
The average Brent crude price rose from US$87.89 to US$101 a barrel. The department cited US-Iran tensions, uncertainty over oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz, higher shipping costs and falling inventories.
Did the rand cause the increase?
No. The rand barely moved during the pricing period. It trimmed only 0.17 cents (a fraction of a US cent) from the petrol price. A weaker rand in October could affect November’s price.
Is there any fuel tax relief?
None has been announced. In September, Minister Gwede Mantashe said there were no immediate plans for new relief. April’s two-month levy cut was at least R3 (US$0.18) a litre.
