Rio’s Village Mall Screens Oscar 2018 Nominees this Weekend

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – This Friday, February 23rd, the Village Mall in Barra will open a movie marathon dedicated to the 2018 Oscars. Until Sunday, February 25th, five productions nominated to the 90th Academy Awards will be screened for free on the mall’s outdoor area.

Opening the event tonight will be “Get Out” (2017), American horror film directed by Jordan Peele. Starred by Daniel Kaluuya and Allison Williams, the film stands out in the horror genre for approaching the racism in the United States.

Apart from its four Oscar 2018 nominations (Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay and Best Actor for Kaluuya), “Get Out” also earned five nominations at the 23rd Critics’ Choice Awards, two at the 75th Golden Globe Awards and two at the 71st British Academy Film Awards.

Following, “Loveless” (2017, “Nelyubov” in the original) will be screened at 9:30 PM. Run by Andrey Zvyagintsev, the Russian tragedy portrays the story of a couple whose son disappears while they argued on getting divorced. Nominated for Oscar 2018 in the “Foreign Language Film” category, “Loveless” won the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival in 2017.

On Saturday, Village Mall will exhibit “Baby Driver” (2017) at 7:30 PM, and “Call Me By Your Name” (2017) at 9:30 PM. Directed by Edgar Wright, the comedy-action “Baby Driver” depicts the story of a young getaway driver who ends up in a theft doomed to fail.

The Italian production “Call Me By Your Name”, directed by Luca Guadagnino, tells the story of Elio, a seventeen year-old boy who discovers his homosexuality with Oliver, his father’s research assistant.

Closing the line-up on Sunday, February 25th, will be “Blade Runner 2049”, to be screened at 8PM. Directed by Dennis Villeneuve and starred by actors like Ryan Gosling, Harrison Ford and Jared Leto, the film is released thirty years after the original “Blade Runner”.

Nominated for “Best Cinematography”, the film portrays the encounter between Rick Deckard, a former blade runner who has been missing for thirty years, and young blade runner K.

On the three days of event, Delfina Food Truck and Los Mendozitos will be in charge of the food and drinks.
