Rio Vinyl Record Fair Today in Flamengo: Daily

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Residents of Rio are not immune to the current resurgence of interest in vinyl records happening worldwide and from 11:30 AM to 8PM today, June 1st, the Feira de Vinil do Rio de Janeiro will host its 10th edition, filling the Instituto Bennett in Flamengo with vendors from across Brazil selling turntables, accessories, t-shirts and, of course, vinyl records.

Admission to the event is free and organizers anticipate over two thousand attendees. Additionally, during today’s edition of the fair, as in previous editions, DJs curated by M.B.Groove, will spin live.

“It’s a great way to spend an afternoon, hanging out talking to all the knowledgeable dealers from different parts of Brazil and listening to the great lineup of DJs dropping rare wax all day,” Botafogo Social Club resident DJ Tee Cardaci told The Rio Times. “My wife collects vinyl too so you’ll probably see us there together, feeding our addiction.”

Cardaci and his wife are not alone as Nielsen SoundScan, a sales tracking system for music in the United States and Canada, found that sales of vinyl records increased thirty-two percent between 2012 and 2013, and show no signing of slowing.

Vendors from Rio exhibiting in the fair today include Tropicália Discos, Sempre Música, Only Music, Baratos da Ribeiro Livraria Ltda and Satisfaction. While São Paulo exhibitors will include Locomotiva, BIG PAPA Records, Mafer Discos, and Beco do Disc, among others.

“When I first arrived in Rio, there were at lot more places to shop for records,” said Cardaci who is also Director of Music Marketing Consultancy at Strategic Sounds Rio, adding, “Now that places like Modern Sound have closed down, the Feira is a great way for us vinyl junkies to get our fix. Whether you’re searching for Bossa Nova LPs on the Elenco label, adding to your collection of Tropicalia or trying to track down that super rare copy of Tim Maia Racional, you’ve got a good chance of finding it at the Feira!”
