This is part of The Rio Times’ daily Rio de Janeiro/São Paulo daily guide coverage for expats and the international community.
01Weather & What to WearFORECAST
Thursday and Friday hold the steady late-autumn pattern at 26°C with 10% rain. Saturday’s 35% rain risk falls across the Fluminense x São Paulo evening at the Maracanã, then Sunday clears toward 27°C for Athletico x Flamengo in Curitiba. Light cottons through the week; carry a light shell Saturday afternoon. Sunset 17h40.
02Day at a GlanceSNAPSHOT
A heavy political-market shock day plus two Copa do Brasil progress nights. The cultural calendar runs deep with No Martins still drawing strong crowds at the MAR and the Vinícius Bar reopening its serious-music lineup.
03What to See & DoCULTURE
No Martins, Sortilégios de desvio — go now, not later
If you only have ninety minutes to give Rio’s culture this week, give them to No Martins. The young paulistano’s first institutional solo at the MAR has been drawing strong crowds since the late-March opening and runs through September 20, but the rooms get quieter by midweek afternoon and the paintings reward time. The premise, curated by Marcelo Campos with Amanda Bonan, Thayná Trindade, Amanda Rezende and Jean Carlos Azuos, sets two registers against each other: the visual denunciation of state violence (the territorial divisions, the exclusionary policies, the segregated urban geography) and what the artist himself calls the desvios, the ways Black Brazilian life sidesteps the violence to keep culture, health, leisure and memory alive.
What you should look for: figures in everyday clothes, not the folkloric or religious costumes that anchored most twentieth-century Afro-Brazilian painting. That choice does most of the work. The figures live now. They live here. Per ART AFRICA, the show “unfolds as a field of deviations, where form and meaning are continually reconfigured.” The MAR co-organised with Galeria Almeida & Dale.
Where to go after: walk five minutes along the Boulevard Olímpico to the Praça Mauá esplanade for the late-afternoon Guanabara light. Thursday 11h–18h · R$20 / R$10 meia · free Tuesdays and Saturdays · Closed Wednesdays · Praça Mauá 5.
Yoshitaka Amano, Além da Fantasia — for the other half of your sensibility
If No Martins is the political-conscience choice, Amano at the CCBB is the pleasure choice, and they pair well as a single Centro afternoon. Two hundred and eighteen originals across the second floor, curated by Antonio Curti, covering the full arc from Tatsunoko Production’s Gatchaman-era anime through Final Fantasy, Vampire Hunter D, the Devaloka series and the Angel’s Egg collaborations with Mamoru Oshii. The AYA Studio immersive room, built from thirteen Devaloka works, is the show’s set piece and worth at least twenty minutes on its own. Free admission, runs through June 22, quieter on Thursdays than weekends.
Combine with the MAR for the most efficient Centro cultural plan of the week: MAR first (11h opening), VLT to Carioca, walk to CCBB by 14h, finish at the AYA room. Thursday 9h–20h · Free · Rua Primeiro de Março 66.
Wagner Tiso at Vinícius Bar — the Thursday to actually leave the house for
The pick of tonight’s Carioca music calendar runs at Vinícius Bar in Ipanema from 20h: Wagner Tiso, one of the surviving giants of the Clube da Esquina generation, the long-time arranger for Milton Nascimento, the man who wrote the score to Walter Salles’s Central do Brasil. The room, at Rua Vinícius de Moraes 39, seats roughly seventy people, drinks are sharp, and the sightlines are short. R$70 meia. Book ahead.
If the Tiso ticket is gone, the strong alternates: Maria Alcina at Blue Note Rio (Av. Atlântica 1910, Copacabana) 20h, R$60 meia, the cabaret-Tropicalist veteran in her element; Kiko Horta & Antonio Guerra at Casa do Choro (Rua da Carioca 38, Centro) 19h, R$40 meia, accordion-and-clarinet choro for the purists; Cybine Combinations at Audio Rebel (Rua Visconde Silva 55, Botafogo) 20h, R$20 antecipado, the experimental room of the week with Seht Zhan, Mário Del Nunzio and JP Caron on the same bill.
Also worth knowing: the Cristo Redentor is lit in blue and orange tonight at 19h30 for the Sindepat Summit at the ExpoRio Cidade Nova, the kind of small ceremonial illumination better viewed from a Botafogo rooftop than up close.
