The strongest Saturday in weeks: museums free, beaches back, samba returning to the open air, and the title-decider under the Maracanã lights.

No Martins Sortilégios de desvio at MAR — free every Saturday, and the show of the season

If you give one Saturday to Rio culture this month, give it to the MAR at Praça Mauá, where No Martins’s first institutional solo runs through September 20 and Saturdays are free, two minutes from the VLT Parada dos Museus. This is the strongest single day to make the visit: free entry, clear weather to walk the Boulevard Olímpico after, and the show that has emerged as the season’s standout for the international community curious about contemporary Brazilian painting. Curated by Marcelo Campos with Amanda Bonan, Thayná Trindade, Amanda Rezende and Jean Carlos Azuos, it occupies the second floor of the 1916 building restored for the museum’s 2013 opening.

What to look for: figures in everyday clothes rather than the folkloric or religious costumes that anchored most twentieth-century Afro-Brazilian painting, a single editorial choice that does most of the argument. The small paper studies where Martins (São Paulo, b. 1991) works through the territorial-violence question before painting it, the large-format finished oils on the second floor, and the catalogue essay by Campos. The show sets two registers against each other: the visual denunciation of state violence and the desvios, the ways Black Brazilian life sidesteps that violence to keep culture, leisure and memory alive. The institutional scale is earned.

CCBB Rio’s Yoshitaka Amano — the pop counterweight five minutes away and free every day

If MAR is the painted argument about Black Brazilian everyday life, the CCBB Rio is the pop-illustration counterweight, and the two pair as a single Centro afternoon five minutes apart. The Yoshitaka Amano show Além da Fantasia runs through July 7, free every day, and makes the case that the Final Fantasy and Vampire Hunter D designer is a serious painter who happens to have worked in games and anime. Look for the Deva Loka canvases in acrylic and automotive paint on aluminium, and the early-1970s Tatsunoko anime ink work where the line discipline begins.

Lapa fully back and the open-air samba returns

With the clear forecast holding through Sunday, Saturday is the night Lapa returns at full volume and the open-air rodas are back. Rio Scenarium at R. do Lavradio 20 runs the Saturday programme from 19h, R$60 cover, the three-storey antiques-filled house that is the bairro’s flagship. Carioca da Gema at R. Mem de Sá 79 runs the Saturday roda from 21h30, R$55, the more intimate room a block away for the music over the spectacle.

For samba in the open air, now the weather firmly allows: the Pedra do Sal roda at Largo João da Baiana, Saúde runs the Saturday samba from 20h, free, the historic quilombo square in the old port where the genre took root and still the most authentic samba night in the city. Trapiche Gamboa at R. Sacadura Cabral 155 runs the Saturday set from 22h, R$50, the warehouse-format bairro classic.

For jazz and MPB: Blue Note Rio atop the Lagoa at Av. Borges de Medeiros 1424 runs the Saturday set from 20h30 with the panoramic terrace, book ahead. TribOz at R. Conde de Lages 19 runs the Saturday jazz from 20h, R$50, the Australian-run room that is the city’s serious jazz address.

MetrôRio runs Saturday 7h–midnight on Linhas 1, 2 and 4, with Linha 2 Estação Maracanã extended to 1h for the Flamengo x Palmeiras matchday operation. The Flamengo crowd-control perimeter on Rua Professor Eurico Rabelo kicks in from 17h, the recommended approach from Centro is Linha 2 direct from Carioca. The VLT runs Linha 1 Parada dos Museus for the MAR-CCBB-Praça Mauá circuit. Saturday Ipanema-Copacabana traffic peaks 11h–13h and 17h–19h, taxi waits around 15-20 minutes at the worst pinch points.

Beaches: Posto 9 Ipanema and Posto 5 Copacabana on full Saturday rotation, lifeguard cover 8h–18h, the Posto 12 Leblon family stretch on the same timetable. The Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas perimeter is closed to cars Saturday 7h–18h for cyclists and runners. The Aterro do Flamengo runs the full closed-car Saturday operation. Rodízio is not in force in the city of Rio de Janeiro.

Saturday is feijoada day in Rio: Bar do Mineiro at R. Paschoal Carlos Magno 99 Santa Teresa from 12h, the classic that still gets the booking right. Casa da Feijoada at R. Dona Delfina 51 the pastel reference, and Aconchego Carioca at R. Barão de Iguatemi 379 for the bolinho de feijoada. For Lapa before the music: Nova Capela on Av. Parque Lage 8h–17h with its Saturday family programme, the Jardim Botânico 8h–17h busy from 9h, the Pão de Açúcar cable car runs 8h–21h (book online to skip the morning queue), and the Lagoa perimeter is closed to cars for the full Saturday cycle. International community: the British Society Athletic Club rugby and cricket fixtures resume on the dry pitch; the American Society RJ Saturday brunch on the calendar; the Aliança Francesa Saturday programme runs.

Flamengo host Palmeiras in the Brasileirão title-decider

The weekend’s marquee fixture is Flamengo x Palmeiras at the Maracanã tonight at 21h, the Brasileirão Round 17 meeting between the two title contenders. Palmeiras lead the table on 35 points; Flamengo are second on 31 with a game in hand, so a home win would close the gap to within touching distance. Both arrive from contrasting midweeks: Flamengo beat Estudiantes to reach the Libertadores last 16, while Palmeiras lost at home to Cerro Porteño. The Maracanã sold out within hours, and the 24°C dry forecast should produce a full house under the Saturday lights. Earlier in the round, Mirassol host Fluminense at 19h with the Tricolor sitting third.

The Ibovespa closed Friday down 0.81% at 176,209.61 points, ending the week off 0.61% — the sixth straight weekly loss, the longest streak since 2018. The dollar finished up 0.57% at R$5.0289. The correction has run since the index touched 199,000 points in April, driven by foreign-investor outflows: institutional capital has been rotating out of Brazilian equities through the second quarter. The CCBB Rio at Rua Primeiro de Março 66 is free every day for the Yoshitaka Amano Além da Fantasia retrospective, through July 7, open Wednesday to Monday 9h–20h. The IMS Gávea is free year-round for the Claudia Andujar Yanomami archive. The Paço Imperial, MNBA, Caixa Cultural Rio, Casa França-Brasil and Centro Cultural Justiça Federal are also free, all within the Centro and Praça Mauá circuit reachable by VLT.
